The Journey of Leadership: Why I Created the SLI Framework™

Over the past year, many people have asked me the same question:

“What exactly is SLI?”

Some know me through executive coaching. Others have attended a workshop, listened to the Serve. Lead. Inspire. podcast, or heard me speak about servant leadership, team effectiveness, or character. While each of those experiences looks different, they’ve always been connected by one underlying belief:

Leadership is not a destination. It’s a journey.

That belief eventually became the SLI Framework™.

Leadership Isn’t a Position

Too often, leadership development begins with the assumption that someone already has a title.

We teach managers how to manage.

We teach supervisors how to supervise.

We teach executives how to lead organizations.

While those skills matter, I believe we’ve overlooked something far more important.

Before we teach people how to lead others, we should help them become the kind of people others want to follow.

Titles create authority.

Character creates influence.

The best leaders I’ve encountered didn’t become effective because they mastered a leadership model. They became effective because they intentionally developed themselves first.

That’s why the SLI Framework begins somewhere many leadership programs don’t.

It begins with the person.

The Three Stages of Leadership

The framework is built around three simple words.

Not because leadership is simple—but because clarity creates action.

SERVE™

Become the Person.

Everything begins here.

Before we talk about strategy, influence, communication, or organizational change, we ask a much deeper question:

How do I want others to experience me?

That question has become foundational in my coaching because it shifts our focus away from what we accomplish and toward who we become.

Serving isn’t about being passive.

It isn’t about putting yourself last.

It’s about intentionally developing the character, self-awareness, humility, courage, and emotional intelligence necessary to create positive experiences for the people around you.

Robert Greenleaf challenged us with what has become known as the Best Test:

Do those served grow as persons?

That question has shaped my thinking more than almost any other.

SERVE is where leadership becomes personal before it becomes positional.

LEAD™

Develop the Leader.

Once we’ve begun developing the person, we turn our attention toward leadership itself.

This is where many traditional leadership programs begin.

  • Communication.
  • Decision-making.
  • Building trust.
  • Coaching others.
  • Navigating conflict.
  • Creating accountability.
  • Developing teams.
  • Leading through change.

These are essential leadership skills.

But they become significantly more effective when they’re built upon a foundation of character rather than simply technique.

Leadership isn’t just knowing what to do.

It’s consistently choosing how to show up.

The goal isn’t to create managers who complete tasks.

The goal is to develop leaders who create environments where people can thrive.

INSPIRE™

Create the Legacy.

Leadership ultimately extends beyond our own success.

The greatest leaders don’t measure themselves by what they accomplish during their tenure.

They measure themselves by what continues because they were there.

Legacy isn’t reserved for retirement speeches.

It’s created every day through the people we develop.

Every conversation.

Every coaching moment.

Every difficult decision.

Every opportunity to invest in someone else’s growth.

Inspiring leaders multiply leadership.

They leave organizations stronger than they found them.

They create cultures people want to be part of.

And perhaps most importantly…

They help others discover the leader within themselves.

Why This Framework Matters

The SLI Framework isn’t three separate programs.

It’s one continuous journey.

Sometimes you’re focused on becoming a better person.

Sometimes you’re learning new leadership skills.

Sometimes you’re investing in the next generation of leaders.

The reality is that most of us move between these three stages throughout our careers.

I’ve certainly found myself returning to SERVE more times than I can count.

Because leadership isn’t something we master once.

It’s something we continually practice.

More Than a Model

This framework has become the foundation for everything I do.

It shapes my coaching conversations.

It guides the workshops I facilitate.

It influences the questions I ask on my podcast.

It provides the structure for every SLI program.

Most importantly, it reminds me that leadership isn’t about becoming more important.

It’s about becoming more intentional.

An Invitation

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing more about each stage of the framework.

The first program launching from this model is SERVE™, a leadership experience designed to help participants develop the personal foundation upon which all great leadership is built.

If you’ve ever felt that leadership development should be about more than acquiring skills…

If you’ve ever believed that who we are matters just as much as what we do…

I think you’ll find a home here.

Because leadership doesn’t begin with a title.

It begins with a choice.

A choice to become the kind of person others are grateful to follow.

And in the end, that may be the most important leadership decision we ever make.

I’d love to hear from you.

Where do you see yourself right now in your leadership journey?

  • Becoming the person?
  • Developing the leader?
  • Creating the legacy?
